Veliko Turnovo
Some of the old trades are still carried out in parts of the 'old town', particularly on Gurko Street, where you can see the old ladies sit outside gossiping. Take the time and enjoy the atmosphere.
During the summer and autumn, a unique event takes place most evenings. Set amongst the ruins of the old palace on Tsarevets hill, a light and music show that is the envy of Las Vegas. It depicts the turbulent history of Veliko Turnovo. The lights change, as does the music, to represent the invasions and liberations by many other countries. This is NOT to be missed.
In addition to having the second most prestigious university in Bulgaria, (after Sofia) it has many cultural museums, monuments, art galleries and architectural preserves.
