El Vedado neighbourhood
Between Old Havana and the right side of the city's major river, the Almendares, we find El Vedado subdivision. The enclave that formerly served as a security perimeter in case of a city attack began in 1859 with the El Carmelo section next to the river mouth.
El Vedado has lush green looks: boulevards with a central pedestrian promenade covered by trees, spacious parks, wide regular streets lined by trees, and an eclectic architecture. This populous area is actually very socially mixed, where you can find great hotels, nightclubs, movie theatres, art galleries, restaurants, museums, and shopping malls. In addition, this is the seat of the bicentennial University of Havana, the famous Malecon, considered the most characteristic image of the city, La Rampa (23rd Street), the Revolution Square, the Jose Marti Monument, and the Colon Cemetery among other interesting sights. El Vedado, nowadays considered as down town Havana, is the main area of entertainment of the city.
