Tarbert is the nearest small town - 10 miles from Luskentyre where further afield is Stornoway in the Island of Lewis - 40 miles from Luskentyre. This is a much larger town where most needs would be catered for.
Lews Castle overlooking Stornoway Harbour is impressive. Harris is, of course, the home of Harris Tweed where the hardwearing but fashionable cloth is weaved and sold all over the world. The wonderful Scarista House restaurant is renowned for its fresh local food. The Church of St Clement at Rodel is also another must to visit. The beaches on the Western Isles are spectacular. The colour of the water, even on a dull day, and the purity of the sand is simply stunning.
Behind the beaches are the machairs - freen grassy plains covered in a mass of wild flowers in the summer. There is a Sports Complex located in Tarbert with first class facilities including jacuzzi and fitness suite equipped with state of the art equipment.
The Isle of Taransay was used to film the BBC programme 'Castaway 2000'. Best viewed from roadside parking place between Horgabost and Borve. During the summer, boat trips can be arranged. Luskentyre Beach is one of the best beaches on the island and has been mentioned as one of the ten top beaches in the world.
