Jane Austen's House at Chawton is a 20 minute walk from Shepherds Court. The house is of late 17th Century design and still houses objects owned by Jane Austen and her family, including her writing table, books and paintings.
A 5 minute drive from Shepherds Court is the former home of naturalist Rev. Gilbert White located in Selborne, which inspired many of his writings. This 18th Century house, set in over 20 acres of restored garden and parkland, runs a host of events and activities during the year. Events include The Unusual Plants Fair, Jazz in June, and the popular Mulled Wine Day. Within the house you will also find the Oates Museum. This interesting exhibition commemorates the Oates family and their exploits; particularly Captain Lawrence Oates, who accompanied Scott to the South Pole in 1911.
Alton is home to the famous Watercress Line Steam Railway. Experience what it is like to travel through the beautiful Hampshire countryside by steam. There are plenty of special events going on throughout the year including the popular 'Day Out with Thomas' and 'Santa Express'.
