Bradley Burn Holiday Cottages

Bradley Burn was once part of a 12th century settlement in the ancient forest of Weardale, where the Prince Bishops came to hunt deer each autumn. Part of the original hunting lodge at Bradley Hall still exists, with medieval vaulted rooms, massive stone fireplaces, surrounding moat and secret tunnel.

Today Bradley Hall and Bradley Burn are a modern 360 acre farm where the Stephenson family have lived and worked for 60 years.

Currently we grow wheat, barley, potatoes, and oilseed rape, and raise beef cattle and lambs.

Our holiday cottages are situated centrally on the farm. All four are barn conversions in the former farmyards at Bradley Burn, where we live in the adjacent farmhouse. All have been carefully renovated to preserve much of their original character, while providing well furnished comfortable accommodation with modern amenities for our visitors, who are welcome to explore the surrounding fields and woods, watch the varied wildlife and observe the farming going on around them.

The farm is situated at the eastern end of Weardale on the edge of the unspoilt Northern Pennines in the beautiful rural area of County Durham; an ideal base for sightseeing.

The attractive village of Wolsingham, two miles west, has a good range of small shops and friendly pubs.

There are facilities for swimming, golf, fishing, and pony trekking nearby.
Further afield but still within easy reach, are the country towns of Bishop Auckland and Barnard Castle, while major centres such as Durham, Newcastle and the Metro Centre shopping complex are less than an hour's drive away.

GRANARY COTTAGE For up to 6 people
4 stars.(V.B.)
Granary Cottage has been extended and completely refurbishmed in 2006. The accommodation now consists of three bedrooms, one with an en-suite shower room, a further bathroom and a large open plan living /dining/kitchen area with exposed beams.

STABLE COTTAGES For 2 people
3 stars(V.B.)

These adjoining single storey cottages each have one bedroom, living room, bathroom and kitchen, and overlook a sunny courtyard where cars may be parked.

The bedrooms have double beds; we can substitute two singles in No. 2 on request. There are no internal steps and doorways are wide enough for most wheelchairs so these cottages are suitable for disabled people, although there are no special adaptations.

HARVEST COTTAGE For up to 4 people
3 stars (V.B.)

A single storey cottage overlooking the stream and fields beyond, with a spacious open plan living area featuring a stone fireplace.

There is one large bedroom with a double and a single bed, with space for a third bed if required.

This cottage is also suitable for disabled people, wheelchair access is via a temporary ramp to the patio doors and there is adequate circulation space and no internal steps.

Cars can be parked immediately outside the cottage.

Each cottage is fully carpeted and has a colour TV and portable radio. Bed linen, towels and tea towels are all supplied and beds are made up for your arrival; we normally use duvets, but sheets and blankets can be substituted on request.

Heating is conventional radiators controllable from each room, supplemented by log effect fires in Stable and Harvest Cottages. During winter months we provide electric blankets on request.

The bathrooms have showers as well as baths. Cots, high chairs and nursery fireguards are all available if we are notified in advance that they are needed and we can usually arrange baby sitting. A single folding bed can be provided in any of the cottages.

All kitchens have electric cookers and microwave ovens.

There is a laundry room for visitors' use, with a modern automatic washing machine and tumble drier.

Our Games Room has a small snooker table and table tennis, books and board games, and a payphone. Garden furniture and a barbeque are also available.

We are happy to arrange for groceries and milk on the day of your arrival if you send a list in advance. Information folders are maintained in each cottage and we are available to answer any queries during the visit.
